Packable Rain Shoes That Actually Keep Water Out
Most packable rain shoes keep out a light drizzle and nothing more. The few that truly seal out water are worth hunting down before a wet trip.
Real waterproofing comes from a sealed membrane or a coated upper with taped seams. If the seams are not sealed, water finds them in minutes.
- Check for taped or welded seams, not just stitched ones.
- Look for a named waterproof membrane or coating.
- Confirm the tongue is gusseted so water cannot pour in.
- Test them in a sink before you rely on them abroad.
I learned to test rain shoes at home first. A pair that survives a faucet test will survive a downpour, and a pair that fails costs you nothing but a return.
